I Have Only Spent Two Days in Japan, and I Will Already Never Financially Recover

After only two days in Japan, Lex has somehow spent an upsetting amount of money already. Now she's writing about it, so her brain can justify some of it “being for work.”

I Have Only Spent Two Days in Japan, and I Will Already Never Financially Recover

So, pieces from me on Rewinder will be slightly different for the next few weeks. I am taking some long overdue holiday time in Japan, and as a result, I will be travelling about most days, my hours are out of sync with the rest of the team, and I can't really review games - or really play any video games that aren't on Switch.

All this means that my writing is going to take on a more casual/blog style for a bit as I just find small things to write about. Yesterday I spent all day alone in Shibuya… And spent too much money. So in an effort to feel better about it, I will turn that excessive spending into content.

The first thing to know about Shibuya, is that it is really big. Like really, really big.

The second thing to know is that it is busy. Like, even on a Thursday at 2pm, it's really, really busy.

You should also know that the Capcom Store, Nintendo Store, and Sega Store are all in the same building, and Tower Records is just down the street.

All these factors combine into a maelstrom of being overstimulated and overwhelmed. Before I knew it, I spent far too much money. So let's run through some of my many mistakes.

Nintendo Store - Classic Controls Gacha Toys

(Top left) a keychain of the face buttons from a North American SNES controller, (top right) a keychain of the face buttons from the North American NES controller, (bottom left) a keychain of the face buttons of the Gamecube controller, (bottom right) a keychain of the D-Pad from the North American NES controller.

These Gacha prizes are basically endorphin-releasing taps that I can now turn on whenever I want. Bored on a train? Jam on the GameCube buttons. Need a distraction during a meeting? Fiddle with the D-pad of the NES. Yes, these will greatly improve my mental health.

Nintendo Store - Carby Kirby Plush

A Plush of Carby, Kirby who has half swallowed a car.

My love for Kirby is no secret, so when I saw a plush of my favourite transformation from The Forgotten Land, I instantly caved.

Nintendo Store - Meta Knight amiibo (Kirby Line) and Wedding Peach amiibo (Mario Odyssey Line)

Meta Knight Amiibo - Kirby Line (left) and Wedding Peach Amiibo - Mario Odyssey Line (right)

Not only are amiibo much cheaper over here (about €12/£10), they are also sealed in box versions of dozens of them, including the pretty rare (outside of Japan) Kirby Line Meta Knight. So I had to finally grab that and also pick up Wedding Peach, which I just somehow never picked up.

Nintendo Store - Splatoon Salmonid Keyring

A Salmonid keychain blind box.

Look at this little freak.

Sega Store - Persona 3 Reload Aegis Mug

Persona 3 Reload Agies Mug.

Listen, I know not everyone likes Episode Aegis, but I still think they are a great character. And I have a mug collecting problem.

Sega Store - Jack Frost Metal Figure

Jack Frost Metal Figure.

Look at this weird little guy!

Sega Store - Metaphor ReFantazio Acrylic Poster

Metaphor ReFantazio Acrylic Poster

I really do love this game, and I've been looking for a nice bit of art surrounding it to put in my room, and boy, did I find it.

Sega Store - Like A Dragon Ichiban Kasuga Head Pillow

Like A Dragon Ichiban Kasuga Head Pillow in vacuum sealed plastic.

OH NO. HE CAN'T BREATHE. SOMEONE GET ICHI OUT OF THERE!

Sega Store - Mini Space Harrier 2 Mega Drive Box Gacha Prize

Mini Space Harrier 2 Mega Drive Box Gacha Prize

May I offer you a tiny Space Harrier in this trying time?

Sega Store - Kiryu Karaoke Collection CD

Kiryu Karaoke Collection CD

At this point, I am just a self-parody, huh?

Tower Records - Silent Hill 2, Ridge Racer Type 4, and NieR Replicant Soundtracks

Finally, I swung by Tower Records after getting drenched in a downpour of rain and picked up three of my favourite soundtracks of all time.

AND NOW SOME SNES CONTROLLER ASMR
