Blazblue Entropy Effect’s Dead Cells Crossover Adds Even More to an Already Packed Roguelike
Mr Dead Cells, reporting in.

I don't know why it's taken me so long to check out BlazBlue Entropy Effect after it launched last year. Even if I didn't have the memory of an ADHD-riddled, sleep-deprived goldfish, sometimes games just pass you by. Thankfully, I get to write about video games, and that's an excellent excuse to double back on things. Also, I got emailed recently about the Dead Cells crossover, and man, I love Dead Cells.
Turns out that 91Act, the developers behind Blazblue Entropy Effect, also seem to love Dead Cells. You get introduced to the character in a unique level that's basically a miniature self-contained Dead Cells level, complete with the humour and fast-paced action you'd expect. It shows how Mr Dead Cells can switch between different weapon sets to entirely change the attack options he has, though admittedly every character has their own mechanics.
There are loads of characters in Entropy Effect, including another crossover with ICEY, and while the general approach is always the same (kill stuff, don't get killed), the specifics differ greatly. Not only can you get upgrades from different elements and styles, as you can in many roguelikes, but you can also store a version of the character you finish runs with. This lets you keep them as a way to boost any future runs you do.
Each character can also unlock more and more attacks and passives unique to them as you progress through each run. By the end of a good run, it feels like you're playing a fighting game, but in a roguelike setting. It's just an absolute delight, and if you're a roguelike fan or a BlazBlue fan in general, I think you'll adore the way it fuses the two.
